Swingline Stack-and-Shred 300X Shredder With SmarTech - Review 2022
The Swingline Stack-and-Shred 300X Shredder ($1,249.99) offers hands-costless shredding at its nigh convenient. Instead of having to insert the documents into a feed slot past hand, you tin open the shredder's lid, insert a stack of up to 300 documents, shut the lid, and walk away while the shredder does all the piece of work. This version pairs with the SmarTech Shredder app, which lets yous monitor your shred job's progress, including notifying you of any issues and when the job is done. The 300X doesn't come cheap, and it isn't as fast as some other automobile-feed shredders we have looked at, but its convenience will appeal to many businesses, especially during revenue enhancement season.
An App—For a Shredder
We reviewed the original Swingline Stack-and-Shred 300X in 2022, before its shredding app existed. SmarTech Shredder—designed by Swingline's parent company, Acco Brands—is a free app for the 300X and several other Swingline auto-feed shredders. Information technology is available for either iOS or Android devices. I tried the app on both my iPhone seven Plus and my iPad Pro; information technology worked seamlessly with the iPad, but I had to reboot the iPhone for it to connect to the shredder.
When you open the app, y'all come to a screen showing the Swingline name, and a grey circle with the give-and-take Connect in the center. When the shredder is connected by Bluetooth (which should happen automatically if the shredder is turned on and Bluetooth is enabled on your mobile device), the circumvolve will turn green, the word Ready volition appear within it, and the shredder's series number volition appear above it. When a shred chore is in progress, the word in the circle changes to Shredding, and when the task is done, you will see Completed. The app will also inform you if the bin is full, the door is open up, there is a paper jam, or the shredder is shut downwards during a cool-off period.
The all-time thing about the SmarTech Shredder app is that information technology enables you to showtime a shred job, retreat to the comfort of your desk-bound (assuming it's inside Bluetooth range), and monitor the progress with a glance at the app. An app like this only makes sense with an automobile-sail feeder, as the nature of a manual-feed shredder requires you to be at the shredder for the duration of the job. Although it's not a brand-or-break feature, information technology'south a prissy touch that some users volition capeesh.
Anatomy of an Motorcar-Feed Shredder
The 300X is deep and tall, measuring 25 by 13.7 past 18.5 inches (HWD) and with a generous 11-gallon handbasket capacity. This shredder is geared toward business use, for offices or workgroups with five to 10 people. On top is a manual feed slot for small paper jobs. Opening the lid lets you put paper in the auto-feed tray, or shred a plastic card or CD. Once you lot've inserted a CD, you but close the shredder's lid, which greatly muffles this usually noisy process.
Controls on the front of the shredder include physical buttons for On, Forward, and Contrary, and keys for the numbers 1 through 4 for entering a passcode to open or lock the lid, a neat security feature when y'all're shredding a stack of sensitive documents. It's a cantankerous-cutting shredder, cutting documents into narrow strips much shorter than the length of a sheet of paper. Private shreds measure almost 1.three by 0.14 inches, small enough to exist secure for nearly all standard business concern documents.
In my testing, the tiptop manual-feed slot could fit viii sheets, but balked at 10; fortunately it automatically reversed the feed for easy extraction of the partially shredded pages. In feeding single sheets through the top slot, one at a fourth dimension, it tested at an boilerplate speed of 11 anxiety per minute (fpm). It chewed through a stack of 50 sheets that I placed in the auto-feed tray in 1 minute 50 seconds, and took 11 minutes, 15 seconds to shred 300 sheets from the tray for a 24.4fpm prune. This was both a bit slower than the original 300X, which shredded the l-canvas stack in 1:38, and faster in shredding the 300-page stack (for which the original 300X took 12 minutes). The 300X is not equally fast every bit the Fellowes AutoMax 200C Auto Feed Shredder, which demolished a 200-canvas stack of paper in v:nineteen, an average speed of 34.5fpm. The Editors' Selection Fellowes AutoMax 130C also beat out out the 300X, shredding a 100-sail stack at 28.9fpm.
It took me several tries to become 300 sheets properly seated in the feeder; a couple of times, the door jammed shut when I tried to close it, and I had to gently coax it open and endeavour reseating the newspaper. When I finally got it right, the shredding started automatically when the door was closed. Unless you're counting out sheets, this shouldn't be an issue, only be careful non to overfill the feeder—I recommend capping your total at 275 sheets.
Bulk Shredding Made Easy
There are faster and less expensive shredders than the 300X, such as the Fellowes 200C, only the 300X has a larger paper capacity. This shredder is the height of convenience, especially at present that it is Bluetooth enabled and coupled with the SmarTech Shredder app—you can merely load the auto-feeder, open the app, and go about your business, and you will exist notified when the shred task is done. The Fellowes 130C holds onto its Editors' Choice; it can't motorcar-feed as much newspaper as the 300X, but is faster at car-feed shredding and can fit more than twice every bit much paper in its transmission-feed slot. The 300X is a ameliorate option for higher-book automatic shredding and can shred optical discs, which the Fellowes 130C can't handle.
Annotation that the older, not-SmarTech version of the 300X is however available. The SmarTech-enabled 300X can be identified past its part number: 1757576S.
